Welcome to our travel blog. We are Tabitha and Nic. In 2011 we 'retired' in our early 40s and set off to travel the world. We spent our first year in South America and have been lucky enough to make two trips to Antarctica.

Our blog is a record of our travels, thoughts and experiences. It is not a guide book, but we do include some tips and information, so we hope that you may find it useful if you are planning to visit somewhere we have been. Or you may just find it interesting as a bit of armchair travel.

Whale watching in Coffs Harbour

Coffs Harbour
Coffs Harbour is not exactly teeming with sightseeing opportunities for us travellers - unless of course it is your burning ambition to see The Big Banana - but what it s teeming with, is whales.

For those wondering about the Big Banana, this was the first of a number of very large models in Australia. This one is the advert for a fun park. Had it been close to where we were staying, we might have taken a look, just for a laugh, but it was too far away to bother making the effort.

The town is pretty standard 'small town' Australia. If you look at the wider area of Coffs Coast, there are beaches, water sports and a number of nature reserves. But we had come here specifically to see the whales.

As usual, we did some homework to try to ensure that we chose a tour that was eco friendly and respected the wildlife we were looking for. We picked a company called Jetty Dive.

Humpbacks, Coffs Harbour
The boat took us out in search of the humpback whales that are prevalent along the coast at this time. We were actually a tiny bit early for the main season, but we had been assured that the chances were excellent nonetheless.

Sure enough, it wasn't long before the first humpbacks were spotted. We didn't spend too long with this pod though, as they weren't getting up to much, and more had been seen elsewhere.

Our second pod was bigger, but still not all that active. We would see the odd fin waving above the water, but nothing too much.

However, our next whale was a different matter altogether. We found a couple of whales, one of which was highly enthusiastic about showing off for us. It put on a real show, with fin waving, slapping the surface of the water, and breaching.

Breaching is when the whale propels itself head first out of the sea, and up into the air. The breach only lasts a split second, before they make an almighty splash as they drop back into the water.

This little guy was happy to keep performing his tricks for us, and we did manage to get a few half decent photos.
