Welcome to our travel blog. We are Tabitha and Nic. In 2011 we 'retired' in our early 40s and set off to travel the world. We spent our first year in South America and have been lucky enough to make two trips to Antarctica.

Our blog is a record of our travels, thoughts and experiences. It is not a guide book, but we do include some tips and information, so we hope that you may find it useful if you are planning to visit somewhere we have been. Or you may just find it interesting as a bit of armchair travel.

El Bolson and Lake Puelo

El Bolson
From Bariloche, we took the bus a bit further south to El Bolson, which nestles in a valley between numerous hills and mountains.

It's one of those places that looks good in real life, but doesn't take a great photo, because unlike our clever brains, the camera can't just ignore all of the buildings, telegraph poles and other ugly and distracting clutter that sits in the foreground.

It's a decent enough town; nothing special, but a few nice cafes and shops to poke around. It isn't really the town that draws people here though - that would be the surrounding area. This is one of those places that you come to get out hiking in the hills and mountains.

Though we still aren't up to that kind of activity, we figured we could do a few of the easier trails. After settling into our cabana, we started off with a walk up the hill behind us to the Mirador Cerro Amigo. Even though it isn't that far or difficult, we felt quite pleased with ourselves for deciding to do it, as it is the kind of thing that I would normally have just said the view isn't worth the effort.

We got a bit distracted by some nice yellow trees before we even got to the uphill bit. I'm not sure what they are, they may be a poplar, and they are probably only yellow because it's autumn, but I rather like them. There are a number of them dotted about in the area, normally in little rows or clusters, and I believe that they have been planted to function as windbreaks.

After taking a few photos of them, we stopped prevaricating and got on with it. The walk wasn't too bad, and I certainly noticed that I coped with it better than I would have done at the start of the year.

On the way back down, we got adopted by one of the town's many stray dogs. It came bombing along behind us near the top, and then trotted along just ahead of us all the way back down into town, waiting if I stopped to take a photo, or when we got to a corners. We felt a bit sorry for it once we got into town, as all of the owned dogs in the gardens of the places down our street barked at it incessantly as we went past. It seemed that they were telling it that it wasn't wanted around there. We were quite pleased that it got distracted by another stray in town, as we were heading to a café and would have felt bad leaving it outside!

Lake Puelo

Another day, we took a bus down to Lake Puelo, which is probably quite nice on a sunny day, but unfortunately it was cloudy and rainy when we went, so most of the views were obscured. Not to be deterred though, we talk a walk through the woods on the edge of the lake and then made the climb up to the viewpoint.

Lake Puelo

This was harder work than the one in town, as it was higher and steeper, with a lot of steps cut into the trail, which is hard on the knees. Towards the top, it did the that annoying thing where it goes downhill for a while, before going back uphill again. I know that it is unavoidable in a natural environment, but I still find incredibly frustrating when I'm already shattered!

Still, we made it in the end, and admired the vague hint of the view that we might have had, if the sun had been out. We just about avoided most of the rain on the way down, and got back to the entrance just in tome for the next bus back.

Aside from that, we had a stroll around the town, and checked out the artisans market.
