Cathedral Grove |
From
Nanaimo, we drove from the east of the island, over to the west, to Tofino. It
was on the way out of town that we stopped off to collect our bacon covered
Nanaimo bars, and we then had a tortuous wait of over thirty minutes before we
could eat them.
We were
making a stop off in Cathedral Grove, a forest of Douglas Fir Trees, which had
been recommended to us by pretty much everyone we spoke to. We managed to find a spot to park in, and paused there for a while to eat our Nanaimo bars, before heading off into the forest.
We could see why it
is popular. There are walks on either side of the road, but as we had a
reasonable drive ahead of us, we just did the one, which included tallest tree.

The walk,
even at strolling pace and stopping for photos, only took about half an hour,
so it is easy to fit in, but if you are really strapped for time, (or really
lazy,) there is a short route past the tallest tree. That one is over 800 years
old, and stand at 76 metres tall, with a 9 metre circumference around the base.
To give you a perspective on its height, they make the comparison with the
Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is a mere 56 metres. I just got Nic to stand at
the bottom.

It is a
pleasant way to spend a little while, and despite the number of cars parked, it
doesn’t even feel too crowded. I’m not quite sure where all of the occupants of the cars were,
in fact.
